Buyer's Guide · Variety Comparison
A practical comparison to help importers choose the right Pakistani Basmati for their market.
Pakistan exports several Basmati rice varieties, each with distinct grain characteristics, aroma profiles and market preferences. The three most commercially significant are 1121 Basmati, Super Basmati and D-98. Understanding the differences between them is essential for any importer looking to source the right product for their specific buyers.

1121 Basmati holds a world record for grain length at 8.35mm+ uncooked, elongating to over 20mm on cooking without sticking. This spectacular visual presentation makes it the dominant variety in Gulf markets where biryani is a staple and presentation matters.
It is available in three grades â Raw, Sella (parboiled) and Steam â giving importers flexibility for different buyer profiles. Sella is the most popular grade in Saudi Arabia and UAE food service. Steam is preferred for premium consumer packs.
Super Basmati commands the highest price among all Pakistani Basmati varieties because it offers the most complex aroma profile â often described as floral and slightly nutty â combined with the softest texture on cooking. It is the preferred choice for connoisseurs, premium South Asian grocery retail and fine dining restaurants.
Its dominant markets are the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany â countries with large South Asian diaspora populations who recognise and pay a premium for Super Basmati's eating quality. Private label consumer packs (1kg, 2kg, 5kg) are the most common format.
D-98 is a shorter-grain Basmati variety with a milder aroma. While it does not match 1121 or Super Basmati for aeting quality, it offers very competitive pricing for importers serving budget-conscious markets or blending with other varieties. It is popular in African markets and in regions where Basmati price sensitivity is high.
